RAINFOREST
 FACTS

SOLUTIONS

Our Rainforests disappear at an average rate of - a football field every second
    - 75 acres every minute
    - 100000 acres a day
    - 39 million acres every year. an area lager than the state of Michigan

O Only 6% of the earth,'s land area is rainforest yet 80% or all surface vegetation is in the rainforest

O 50% of the earth's oxygen is generated by rainforest.

O 50% to 90% of ALL LIFE forms exist in the rainforest.

O 50% of ALL pharmaceuticals originated as plants, 25% of medicines still use plant extracts, yet less than 1% of rainforest plants have been screened for medical use.

O 70% of current medicines believed to have cancer fighting properties are from the rainforest Continued deforestation may destroy the cure for AIDS or cancer - before they can be discovered

O We are losing an estimated 270 species a day to extinction - the fastest rate since the ice age 'The rainforest is a fountain of un-researched products and we are destroying it at an alarming rate ' E O Watson, Pulitzer-prize Biologist

O Estimates of the number of rainforest species yet to be identified are as high as 100 MILL ON

O 17-20% of the carbon dioxide introduced into the earth's atmosphere, about 2 and 1/2 Billion tons annually, comes directly from the burning of rainforest From space NASA recorded 180,000 forest fires in 6 weeks from just one Brazilian state.

O The "slash and bum" method of farming eventually eliminates the possibility of regeneration of vegetation by destroying seeds.

O Worldwide. 200 million people live in rainforest; yet food, soil and water degradation from deforestation disrupts one billion lives.

O On average eight Indian tribes become extinct yearly because of rainforest destruction

The Solutions are in progress.
